A Thousand Ships was an event for 30,000 people created by Dr Lyra Monteiro, Barnaby Evans and myself. It memorialized Rhode Island's history running the American end of the Transatlantic slave trade.

We wanted the impact of the event to continue beyond that night. We documented every aspect of the event and interviewed participants and attendees about its impact.

Working with designer Jason Tranchida, we created a beautiful book filled with historical information and moving descriptions. We also received a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities to distribute the book in local libraries and schools.
