San Franswitcho

In what is surely little more than a curious coincidence, the latest issue of McSweeney’s magazine is laid out as a multi-supplement, fictional broadsheet newspaper called the San Francisco Panorama (which looks awesome), while the actual San Francisco Chronicle is about to become some kind of hybrid glossy newspaper. Next up: the paper Kindle, and the internet in handy book form. Oh.

I’m going to be speaking next month in Lisbon at the annual conference of the Society for News Design – Spanish Chapter, called ñh6 (full program here, PDF), talking about choosing stories to fit your format (and vice versa). Anyone playing Conference Bingo should mark their cards with the word “magazine” right now.

Also on the rather stellar bill: Luke Hayman, Kris Viesselman, Fernando Gutierrez, Manuel Lima and the team behind the revolutionary new Portuguese newspaper i, as well as various big hitters from the Spanish and Portuguese newspaper, photojournalism and typography scenes. I’m rather looking forward to it. Come along, do.

It’s been a significant few days for magazines in the States. Latest addition to my pile appeared over the weekend: WSJ., the Wall Street Journal’s new magazine.

The reaction so far seems indifferent, but they seem confident that it’s a BMW 7 series. So how does it drive?
