Burst of the unexpected

11 July 2002. No comments yet. Inspired by .

I was late for work this morning because of a burst water main. And it was incredible. People were stopping, laughing, talking to strangers. Kids were running around and through the localised mist, getting drenched. The cars were all driving into the spray and then stopping as the deluge completely obscured their vision (although one man looked very smug as his urban 4x4 finally got some proper use wading through the huge puddles).
People in suits were on their phones, giggling and pointing. Suddenly the sun hit the spray and there was a fantastic rainbow; some of the crowd applauded. Never underestimate the power of a break in the status quo, especially one four storeys high.

It was caused by a digger hitting a 26 inch water main – at least 20,000 gallons of water were lost. All to a good cause, if you ask me.

I'll post my own pics from it soon.
